The POGO Women’s Movement expresses its profound sorrow over the untimely passing away of our beloved friend and comrade Sevgül Uludağ, a woman who dedicated her life to the pursuit of truth, justice, peace, and the reunification of our homeland.
Sevgül was a courageous Turkish Cypriot journalist, activist, and human rights defender who fought for decades for the rights of women in Cyprus. Beyond that, Sevgül worked tirelessly for years to locate Cyprus’s missing persons, searching for evidence, examining testimonies, and playing a decisive role in uncovering the truth for dozens of families, both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot. Through her work, she brought relatives of missing persons from both communities closer together, proving that pain knows no ethnicity and that only truth, justice, and reconciliation can pave the way for a shared future.
Her voice has always been firmly against nationalism, hatred, and oblivion. Despite the attacks, threats, and targeting she faced from extremist circles on both sides of the divide, she never abandoned her struggle for historical truth, peaceful coexistence, and the reunification of Cyprus.
In 2019, the POGO Women’s Movement had the distinct honor of awarding her the 3rd Women’s Contribution Award “Kleio Christodoulidou and Katina Nikolaou,” as a modest acknowledgment of her invaluable contribution to our country and her dedication to the values of peace, reconciliation, and humanity.
Her loss leaves an irreplaceable void. Her example, however, will continue to inspire all of us who believe in a reunified Cyprus, free from occupation, nationalism, and hatred, where historical truth and justice are prerequisites for lasting peace.
We express our sincere condolences to her family, her loved ones, and her fellow activists.
